Terry McGivern

Head of Industry Engagement
Institute for Sustainability

Terry McGivern heads up the Resource Efficient Buildings division of  the Institute for Sustainability (IfS), overseeing a programme of practical research,  demonstration, and  dissemination  projects. The IfS is an independent charity established in 2009 to accelerate the delivery of economically, environmentally and socially sustainable cities and communities. It does this by working with a wide range of cross sector partners in the UK and internationally to deliver demonstration projects and show how practical change can be made systemically and at scale in real world settings
Terry works with many leading industry organisations and businesses in the built environment sector, public authorities and academia, particularly on the challenges and opportunities presented by low carbon building retrofit.  He has over 30 years’ experience in built environment organisations - in R&D,  knowledge dissemination, business development and general management – including as Chief Executive of the London Building Centre; business management in Hanson Group; and developing technology based SMEs.
This latter experience has informed much of Terry’s work at the Institute – supporting the wider industry supply chain (dominated by SMEs) to prepare for the challenges and opportunities of the retrofit market. IfS has built up a strong track record of championing and disseminating (impartial, independent, reliable) best practice in low carbon building retrofit and making this openly accessible and widely available at no cost.
